I have harvested seeds before where one of them looked like the inside white of the seed was busting out of the seed coat, looking almost like a popped popcorn kernel. Has anyone else seem this before, know what causes it and if that seed is still good or not? Sorry, but I don't have a picture to show.
Thanks,

Becki

I harvested such a seed yesterday. I'll try to take a photo of it today.

I was asking myself the same questions. I have no answers.

This happened to me last year on alot of my White Temptation crosses. I was advised by some people on this site to plant them up and see what happened. None of the seeds sprouted they just rotted. I have photos of the seed in my album. I would say after what happened in my instance not to waste your time with them.

Also this topic was discussed a bit in the post on Hybridizers corner "Plodity Problem" I have the pictures of some of those burst seeds in that post from 10 months ago.

Becki,
I think you got the right idea, I too had this occur, and I think the seeds indeed did 'pop', just like popcorn. Heat and steam within the pod may be a likely culprit.
We had 34 days of 90 or higher this summer in our area.
My popped seeds occurred on SC Starburst in the hottest driest part of my garden. Most certainly this kills the seed.

Anyone else have a better explanation?

Thanks, guys,

Valerie, I checked out the picture in your album and that is indeed what I was talking about, thank you.

Nina, It would certainly make sense if the seed burst from too much heat and humidity because we too had a whole month or so of 90 plus degree weather and 600% humidity ( at least it felt like it). I did throw it away assuming it would be worthless. I've only seen maybe three like this all summer, so I guess I should consider myself lucky.

Thanks!
