TOPIC: Adding any new daylilies this Fall? I am!

Adding any new daylilies this Fall? I am! 8 months, 2 weeks ago #17680

I just had to have some new daylilies this fall so when Judy Davisson announced her Fall intros I bought all three of them. I was especially interested in them bacuse they are late bloomers.

That got me in the mood to get even more and I bought three more late late blooming Davissons from Judy on the Lily Auction, one intro and two seedlings. Then I bought a regular season bloomer by Ryan Gossard intro called GET R DONE from Judy. So all told seven new daylilies coming from Judy.

I also just had to buy from the Thoroughbred Daylilies clump sale. First I got HOT TAMALES AND RED HOTS (2009) which is a sizzeling red, orange and black red mix mid season bloomer. I have loved it since I first saw the picture. Then two lavender Dips that are late season bloomers. IN HIGH REGARD (2010) and FRUITY OVERTONES (2010). I just love the colors and I love those late bloomers.

If that wasn't enough I have been on the Lily Auction buying 2012 intros from Mary Jane Meadows of Westbourne daylilies. I got WESTBOURNE TID BIT, WESTBOURNE LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT and WESTBOURNE KEG OF DYNAMITE. Also 2011 intro GODS NATURE PLEASURES.

So I have lots of daylilies coming this September.

Hi Rita - I missed the clump sale at TD but it's probably a good thing. I'm just out of room here in this small garden and said I wouldn't even look to add. But we had 20" of rain in August and I lot some to crown rot, so that gave me an excuse to buy a few. (And with 2" of rain today and more rain through Thursday, I wish we could send some to TX.) I love the poly monster green throat blooms of Judy's Rambunctious Rosie.

I am out of room here also. In fact I didn't buy ANY new daylilies for spring because I was out of room. But I knew I wanted to get some new ones for fall as I just couldn't stand it any more. So I moved some daylilies around here while I moved about 25 out of the garden in order to have room to add new. I ususlly end up shoffeling some daylilies around each year anyway so this year was no different.

I have a really nice collection of late and extra late blooming daylilies and am always looking for fabulous late bloomers to add. So this year I did go heavily for those late bloomers.

My plants from Judy Davisson arrived yesterday afternoon and I already have them all planted. It took two large priority mail boxes and when I unpacked them I saw why. The plants and roots are large and there are lots and lots of fans.

The entire order. I had ordered 7 plants and got nine. The two bonus plants were EARLY SHIRLY and another of her late blooming seedlings! I am just thrilled.

Here are the three 2011 fall intros. Advertized as single fans each. HA-HA. One of them is four fans and the other two three fans each. I just KNEW she was not gonna send single fans.

This is the largest plant of the order. It is WHERE'D Y'ALL GO and in case you can't tell, it is 6 fans.

Wow, I got a large box from ThoroughBred Daylilies today. You know when people use the large priority mail boxes but don't fold the flaps down so that the box becomes twice as large? That's what I got with five daylilies. I had bought three and received two bonus daylilies. Especially exciting was that I did receive the daylilies I had requested as bonus plants so I am a really happy camper.
Annette put a note in there to me and said one of the dips I bought, IN HIGH REGARD was still in bloom as they dug it, how cool is that?

In case you forgot I got HOT TAMALES AND RED HOTS and then two lavender Dips that are late season bloomers. IN HIGH REGARD (2010) and FRUITY OVERTONES (2010). My bonus plants were DREAM SEQUENCE and CESTIAL MUSIC.

The clumps are just gorgeous and so big I easily have enough to divide even before planting if I wanted to. But I am not gonna do that. I am planting these gorgeous plants just as they are. Looking forward to great blooming next season!

Big Box before unpacking.

All five clumps. Two of them are nine fans and the rest are all seven fans each.

I don't add daylilies in the fall. I had to tell a local grower that "No, I don't want Vertical Horizon yet". I will be getting it in the spring.

Early Fall is a great time to plant daylilies here. They get an extra start on next spring.

I always thought that fall planting was fine and also dividing daylilies and other perennials. It has just come to my attention this year that in the north (I am zone 4b) it is not recommended by some DL specialists. But as most of my DL problems seem to come from undivided weed-infested clumps, I need to do this when the weather is gardener friendly or it doesn't get done.

Hi Rita,
I will have to check out the DL growers you just got those terrific plants from. I am making a new bed this fall for all of the DLs I ordered this year.
My DH farmer is going to dump loads of compost in the spot of my choice! But I will not be planting it until next spring. Until then, the newbies will all huddle together for comfort wherever I found a bit of space.

Getting your new gardenbed ready now for planting in the spring is an excellent idea. That makes it really easy to plant first thing in the spring.

I don't really know what is too late to divide more up north from me but here I do lots of fall garden chores including divideing and moving daylilies. Works out just fine!
