I'm on the Zone 4/5 line and I was wondering what you best patterened performers were? I got Blockbuster for spring and I want some patterns to cross with it.

I have Chaotic (Gossard) but it hasn't bloomed yet so I don't know what pattern will show. Get Jiggy looks like it shows pattern better in warmer climates.

I was thinking about Victorian Gardens Heavens Applause. Anyone has experience with it?

Maybe even appliques would be something to try. I heard that Spacecoast Seashells doesn't do well up here. Anyone see any truth to that?

Thanks in advance!

Dani

I have SPACECOAST SEA SHELLS here in my zone 5/6 garden. This past season it did have a hard time opening fully in the very early am. It does increase good, lots of scapes and buds.
We had a very early summer and our peak bloom was a week earlier than normal. I believe it started blooming here early July. All my gardens are in full sun from sunrise to sunset.

This photo was taken July 14th at around 8:00am .

I think a peron could use VERTICAL HORIZON, REACH FOR THE SKY, NICK OF TIME and LANNY MORRY back and forth and come up with countless wonderful patterned offspring. Others that I'm working with include SOLARIS SYMMETRY, INTELLIGENT DESIGN, ASHTON'S GIGGLES, WOMANIZER, NINJA STORM, and BRADEN'S TATTOO. Some Stamile's include the ever relizable HUCKLEBERRY CANDY, MYSTICAL RAINBOW, FANTASY EYES, and BUTTERFLY COVE. I have a ton of "new to me" plants that I can't comment about on hardiness yet but that show wonderful potential. PAHA SAPA THUNDERCLOUD offspring are showing some patterns.

One that I think should have some potential but might be somewhat tender is LAVENDER TEMPEST. It's wintered here for one year but still has to prove that it's hardy. I made a couple of crosses with it this year.

Here are a few seedling photos from this summer involving some of the parents I listed. I'm in the early stages of working with patterns so expect more interesting ones in future years.

Hi, Jill. Nice looking seedlings! Where are you in Wisconsin? What zone? I'm working on reblooming tets in Northern Illinois, zone 4. It's only my second year, so I haven't had anything bloom yet, but have 1100 seedlings ready to show me their stuff next summer! I have only 1 of the patterned tets that you mentioned....will look up the vital statistics on the rest. Have any of them ever rebloomed for you?

Jill,
I really like your first photo as it has a more unique pattern to it. If you are breeding for patterns, you definitely need to check out the work of Bob Faulkner (Natural Selection Daylilies). After seeing his daylilies firsthand a couple of years ago, he surely is the KING of modern-day patterned daylilies. Just my humble opinion of course...

A lot of the patterned daylilies show patterns in early morning, but very few still show separated bands of color after a day in hot sun. VICTORIAN GARDENS HEAVEN'S APPLAUSE and BUTTERFLY RIPPLES (Gossard) are two I highly recommend, and yet in 90° heat the colors bleed, esp in BR.

Some of the older varieties show better patterns after a hot day, and have been passed by, maybe a little too soon. Kaskel's older ETCHED EYES is a little soft, but a beautiful yellow with a multi-layered (not separated) butterfly pattern. Big 6" bloom, large healthy plant and fertile both ways. Tetra EXOTIC ECHO has 3 distinct patterns even after a day in full sun, and Tetra BEN LEE has more patterns than most conversions, though the often bleed together after a hot day. A lot of patterning is weather related, but in the right season, I've seen BEN LEE with 5-6 bands of purple and with little white triangles between the layers.

You can obtain Kaskel's older OPAL RING, Stamile's LAVENDER RAINBOW, and Petit's TIME IN A BOTTLE at very reasonable prices, and they are all great multi-patterned tets. I'm still using LAVENDER RAINBOW as it is a 6.5 inch side-facing bloom on a 32" tall scape with 3-4 laterals and 35 buds. It bloom on a huge beautiful DORMANT plant and is fertile both ways. Sibling MAGNIFICENT RAINBOW is even prettier and an easy pod-parent, but not quite as large and much shorter scape, with only about 15 buds here.

Dan Robarts is a young focused hybridizer who is breeding almost exclusively for blue eyes and patterns. He is a member here and I wish he would touch down and post his thoughts. He grows ALL the new patterns and has a very discerning eye.
