TOPIC: Crocosmia - Anyone grow it?

Crocosmia - Anyone grow it? 1 year, 11 months ago #11501

I saw a picture of it in one of the albums and was wondering if anyone else may be growing it and can give some feedback.

I read that it is suppose to bloom from June to August and perhaps into the fall. True?

I grow the variety Lucifer, a 3" tall, brillant red flower. We live in Zone 5a, so we bury the bulbs about 8-9" down. I won't have anything I have to dig up in the fall. Not a single visitor, doesn't ask what it is (and I thought they came to see the Daylilies)

I'm seeing on different sites that the hardiness is zones 5-10 and then others show 6-10.

Gail: How long does it actually bloom for?

I have some that I planted afew year ago. IT just comes up each year on it's own. I absolutely love the flowers. JUst so usual and striking. Doesn't look like anything else.

I have Lucifer in my garden as well. It does fine but does not clump up quickly in Zone 5b. The hummingbirds adore it. It starts blooming when the Monarda/Bee Balm starts to look ratty.

I ended up ordering 20 bulbs since I read that it is better to plant them in multiples, ie 3 to 4 to a planting spot since they may take a few seasons to get established and multiply.
Just waiting for them to arrive.

Hi Julia,

I grow Lucifer and another variety of Crocosmia that has orange blooms. Both Of these are tall. They multiply very fast and are very showy in the garden.
I live in zone 8 so I plant them very shallow and they overwinter fine.

I also grow two shorter varieties that are both yellow. They are much slower to multiply. The blooms are quite showy.

Lucifer grows in my garden and seems to be hardy and desease free. I havent noticed any insects that bother it either. Hope it continues to be this carefree.

I received an unknown variety from a swap last year. It bloomed beautifully for me and is beginning to pop up already for this year. It seems to have spread a good bit and I am anxious to see the larger clump in bloom this year. If it continues to spread at this rate though, I will have to move it.

For those of you who grow this in a zone 5, how deep (if you can remember) did you plant your croms? I'm not planning on digging these up for winter.
I'd love to get more colors, but thought to start with Lucifer first and see how it goes. Which reminds me to follow up and find out when the croms are coming.
