TOPIC: Thrips and aphid control

Thrips and aphid control 1 year, 8 months ago #13236

Does anyone know what I can do to control thrips and aphids. My daylilies already have buds and I'm not sure what to do?

Hi Susan, there is information on pest control on the AHS site at: www.daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/pests.html. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I just don't want to destroy my buds.

And very good cause for pause, Susan. I'm experiencing dropped buds, albino blooms which I contribute to the chemicals I'm using. I'm trying to find out exactly which one it is: Clevis & Nickel Plus for rust, Miracle Grow for fertilizing, Kphite to prevent crown rot, or Bonide systemic for bug control. Right now I'm leaning towards the Kphite. Bonide, in theory, should work for your situation as you sprinkle the granules & water it into the soil. The plant sucks up the chemicals thru the roots & makes the plant yucky to bugs. What is great is that you're not spraying anything to ruin the buds nor killing beneficial bugs. I chose Bonide because it directly states that it can be used on thrips. I wanted to tell you the rest of the story to make sure you know that I'm not 100% certain what is causing my problem. The reason I'm not suspecting the Bonide is that I ran out before I got to the P's & Popcorn Pete had a tie dye bloom that was obviously caused by a chemical.

I have used Bayer three in one. It is the kind that the plants suck up through the roots. Maybe I didn't use enough. I'll try again in the fall. Thanks for the reply.

We used this 2 days ago. Spinosad is the active ingredient which is classified as an organic substance and is supposed to be safe on the beneficial insects such as lady bugs and bees when sprayed in the evening.

It's new on the market for home use. In time we can post back on what we observe.
