I've always just soaked mine in water before planting them and then gave them a dose of alfalfa pellets or alfalfa tea (the kind they feed horses and not rabbits) and slow release fertilizer on top of the soil when they are planted. Then I just water them and mulch and if it doesn't rain within the week, I water them again and they all have grown so I guess it works. I will add milorganite on top of the mulch in another week or so to keep the deer/animals away.

I got an order in the springtime like the way you mentioned. Alot of yellowing leaves, small fans but nice root systems. I had let them soak overnight, planted like I mentioned above and most are doing very good and sending up scapes. Only 1 seems to be a bit slow in regrowing new leaves.

Good luck.

2 years ago I received a daylily from Israel. If I remember right it was almost 2 weeks in transit. Nice roots, but the tops were almost white. I potted it and placed it in the deepest shade I had until it began to show some green. Every two days I would move it out a little further into the light until it looked normal. Once it had hardened off I planted it in the garden. It has done very well.
