There are lots of people breeding daylilies these days, many hybridizers that stand out, many that do not. Many that promote and many that never blow their own horn and whose work will never be publicly known. It is a personal thing happening and each individual does it for their own reasons. Who knows why I started this with those comments. All I really wanted was to write about one of my favorite daylily hybridizers and one of the most under appreciated ones.
Bret Clement, Carmel, Indiana has been producing wonderful cultivars for quite a while. Maybe it is because he has many of the same hybridizing goals as me. Spidery late blooming diploids! His cultivars blend in very nicely with my hybridizing program. His first offerings were about 2004 and included some great ones FORNSIC EVIDENCE, LILTING LOLA and ENIGMA VARIATIONS, all in the purple to lavender ranges. Since then hs JACOB'S LADDER, a UF continues to be one of the prettiest pinks of that form I have seen. His late reds BOOG'S WOOGIE and PICK ME UP are some of the later bloomers in my garden, both have great b&b. Bret also does tets but most of those are fatter, rounder- in the UF range his BARRISTER'S CHOICE was one of the best bloomers at VOTd this last season. Although not pod fertile, I have lots of seed with it as a pollen parent. BARRISTER'S CHOICE is, I believe, out of CAMEROONS breeding and is a true purple with lavender chalk watermark. Another great purple is GRACE BESTOWED, a dip that curls and twists. I love the unique names that many breeders give their creations and Bret is no exception with his CAT series: TWO CATS LAUGHING, HONEY I SHRUNK THE CAT, ONE TOO MANY CATS, TWO CATS MOURNING and his 2011 intro DESPERATE HOUSECAT. I think you can access his website through Daylily Trader.

Another hybridizer I have become a big fan of is Michael Miller. His plants perform wonderfully for me and are real show offs in the beds. I ordered again from him this season and can't wait to see the 2010s grow here. I have used several of his open forms, and his full forms in crosses and plan to use them more this season. He and his parents Paulette and Larry are in VA and run Small World Gardens. Michaels SW STARS AND STRIPES has a long bloom season and is an a eye catcher with its huge red spidery blooms!
My favourite southern hybridizer is Pat Stamile. He accounts for about 15% of the daylilies in my garden. Most of my daylilies are from northern hybridizers but no one hybridizer is dominant. I like a little bit of everything from the north. My garden is mixed perennial so a mix of hybridizers works well.
Of all the groups created so far this is the one I like the best by far. I love to discuss daylilies by hybridizer and now we have the perfect place to do so.
In Louisiana my favorite is Nan Wilkerson. Nan is such a nice person. Beautiful plants that grow well for me. She also won HM for EYES RIGHT JONES & DIZZY MISS LILY this year.WE go at least once a year and OOH and AHH over her seedlings. She loves to share her Knowledge and Plants. Super nice Lady.
In Texas none other than Jack Carpenter. My better half "Belinda" gets mad at him because he wont sell her some of his seedlings she likes He also shares his expertise we us

So, not only can one write on an indivuals wall but each forum group has a wall to write on too? Great! I just joined this great. Fabulous idea for a new group.
My favorite hybridizer is Curt Hanson. I love the hardiness, the substance, the watermarks, the wacky forms, the height . . . I don't limit myself to Hanson cultivars, however. There are still many Munsons growing here that I wouldn't do without. I'm also a big fan of Judy Davisson's intros, and admire many of the Rice intros. I wish I could grow more of the southern-bred daylilies, but hardiness is an issue here in Michigan.
Who is my favorite hybridizer? I am working on this. So far I have them broken down into groups, Dip spuffs, Dip full form, Tet spuffs, Tet full form, Doubles, and although I think pollys are just not consistant enough yet, I do have a couple favorite poly folk represented in my beds!
Do I collect the work of one, a few, or many hybridizers? I collect plants of many hybridizers, actually more than 200 hybridizers are represented in my garden. Most of these are well known. About 40 are female and the others male.
Tell you about it? Bits and pieces maybe. I have never set out to collect all of any one hybridizers work. I do go back and order more from a given hybridizer when I experience good things with his/her plants in my garden. Show pics? I will share some but I am a horrible photographer.
Tell you about new or unfamiliar persons' works? Yes, I will share what I can. I actually have mentioned this person on another group site. You should check out JD Stadler at
www.celestialdaylilies.com He has quiet a selection, but check out his lovely purple double, DATE WITH DESTINY, I believe is the name. His late blooming, dormant tet CROSSFIRE is fabulous, as are his blacks! Great plants under these beautiful blooms too folks. He is very modest and underplays his things, so I will tell you they are great!
Will share more on favorite hybridizers later.

Hi Judy, Thanks for the invite.
My favorite hybridizer is Brother Charles Reckamp, which means I am also a huge fan of Roy Klehm where Brother Charles finished his hybridizing.
I really like the yellows with the hints of pink Ruffled Strawberry Parfait "my favorite daylily of all" Techny Peach Lace, Techny Peace, Techny Spider, Fragrant Bouquet, Garden Symphony, Ruffles Ah Go Go, Angels Realm, are some of the examples of this type, a couple of others Wide Awake, rose with a yellow edge, and the bright orange Carrots Forever are a couple of other personal favorites
