Before you click on FRIENDS, it is important to know what they are. You may never have previously met some of our members in real life or on other websites. Before 'Requesting' a member to be your FRIEND, you should first check out their profile. Is there something that interests you about them such as they share the same hardiness zone as you, the same state or region, you've read messages that they posted in the Forums that you can relate to, or simply because you'd like to make some new daylily acquaintances amongst our members. These are all good reasons to extend the hand of friendship to another member of our website.
Let's explore how you would go about requesting that someone be your FRIEND:
Keep in mind that just because you do not know anyone here yet does not mean you should avoid becoming their ‘Friend’. This is how many long-lasting daylily friendships are made. Someone has to extend the hand of friendship first. Many of our members do this automatically when a new member joins. Some wait until they have familiarized themselves with the forums and gotten to know some members through their posted messages. Do not be offended or leery of someone that seem to jump right on you as soon as you join with a request to be your FRIEND. It is no different than going to a Daylily Convention and entering a room full of daylily people you don't know. Many people will immediately step up to say hello or offer a handshake. Receiving a FRIEND request is the same thing, just a friendly gesture.
Accepting a FRIEND request also means you may be able to see when one of your FRIENDS come online (unless they have opted to remain invisible or have changed their online status to 'Busy') within the little box at the bottom right hand side of your screen when you log in to the site. This box designates who your FRIENDS are and what their current status is.
1. From the Home page, the first icon, under the FRIENDS setting, is SHOW ALL – this shows you an avatar/picture of all the people with whom you have accepted or made FRIENDS with already.
Simply put ‘Friends’ is a filtering system to produce a list for you of members you have previously 'accepted' the request of friendship from or that you've 'offered' a request of friendship to.
The first button, FRIENDS, simply tells you all the people you have agreed to be friends with.
This FRIENDS button lets you connect easily with those individuals you have mutually agree are Friends.
2. The second FRIENDS button, is a SEARCH button which, when clicked on, brings up a list of all members you have already agreed to be friends with. This is a quick and easy way to find one of your friends quickly.
3. ADVANCED SEARCH lets you find individuals you are not already Friends with, who share interests in common with you. Type in what interests you, for instance "white daylilies" and see whose profile comes up. (Note: This is another good reason to be more elaborate when you fill in the INTERESTS section of your own profile, because this is how other members might find other members they have something in common with). If nothing comes up, refine your search to something else you are interested in. You can request all your criteria be matched or just certain things. The site will search all the key words in your criteria and list members with similar interests, Wish List items, etc..
4. INVITE FRIENDS
You have real life friends who may not be members of Mydaylily.com but perhaps you believe they would enjoy our website. Here is where you can INVITE them to the site as a guest or to join if they so choose.
5. REQUEST SENT
When you REQUEST someone to become your Friend, that request is sent to them and they may choose to agree, decline or ignore your Friendship request. When you receive such a request yourself, you may select "Yes, I would like to be Friends with this person.", or "No". If the two of you become Friends, then their avatar will appear when you log on to your home page in a list of all your Friends, and your avatar will appear on theirs.
To communicate with a ‘Friend’ on your list, just hover your mouse over their icon, click on it, and you will open a private message in your inbox to begin writing a message to send to them. If they are online, an instant private message box will open at the bottom of your screen that you can easily instant chat in.
6. PENDING MY APPROVAL
"Pending my approval" indicates a request for friendship that has been made to you that you have not yet accepted. It will stay there indefinitely until you either accept or decline. This gives you time, if you need it, to check out their profile or get to know them elsewhere on the website.
NOTE: You will notice, on your home page, an image of a bell at the near upper right corner. If that bell is colored red, it means you have a private email from someone at Mydaylilies.com. This red bell will have a number indicating how many unread messages you have. Click on the bell icon to see a list of whom you have received messages from.
